Can you replace the pulley on an alternator
VWBeamer Veteran Member. It common for the altenators to go over K miles. I would leave it alone. BTW, you can replace the pulley yourself for 60 bucks, it is a 10 min job. VWBeamer, is correct, if well taken car battery doesn't get drained completely down then jump started and alternator gets overloaded to try charge battery up, also not exposed to fluids constantly then it will last long time. Most commonly that wear out on alternator are brushes and bearings usually due to seized up pulley and water injection bad pulley are very common to wearing out altn bearings if not got replaced right away due to excessive vibration.

Maybe you should do prevent maint.
To the Original Poster: This is a really easy mechanical job but it requires a special tool and the basic know-how and tools to do basic mechanical repair. If this is completely new to you or you are not equipped or inclined to do such a replacement, by all means have it done but you really don't need to replace a fully functioning alternator because the pulley needs replacing.
That said, if you are mechanically inclined and want to tackle this, there is a "how to" on this repair and the specialty tool can be lent by a member. Campbell spent over 15 years as both a manager and an under-car specialist in the automotive repair industry.

Step 2 Test the gun to make sure it is rotating counterclockwise. Step 3 Attach the anvil of the gun to the square drive of the socket. Step 4 Use a pair of channel locks to hold the pulley bearing stationary.
Step 5 Remove the pulley bearing. Step 6 Insert the new pulley bearing in the alternator. More by the author:. About: Diy More About Mjtrinihobby ».
The nut unscrews and the pulley slides out. Can't get any easier than that! Did you make this project? Share it with us! I Made It! AkitaB 2 years ago.
