As the platform diving events continue this week, we spoke to Jacob Brehmer, diving coach for Ball State University in Indiana, for some answers. They usually rinse off in water that's warmer than the pool.
Indoor diving pools like the one at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre must maintain water temperatures of at least 26 degrees Celsius Diving is such a precise and fast-twitch sport, if the diver gets a little cold and tight, it could really affect their performance.
Staying warm is also one of the reasons swimmers and divers use tiny towels called chamois -- pronounced "shammy" -- at major events. The towels are portable and extremely water absorbent, allowing the divers to dry off quickly and stay warm, Brehmer says.
Olympic divers perform mind-blowing acrobatics into deep pools at high velocity, and keeping their muscles healthy is a crucial part of their success. Britain's Tom Daley will appear at his fourth Games this summer after making his Olympic debut aged 14 at Beijing , and will mark each dive with a rinse in the shower. Diving into a cold pool can potentially cause muscles to cramp up or become tense, but the shower helps to keep muscles loose between dives. Staying in a hot tub in between dives helps to keep the contestants muscles loose and relaxed ahead of their turn on the board.
Arenas are also often air conditioned, another way in which divers muscles can become tense and cramp, so the hot tub helps to avoid this and protect their performance.
