How does taper lock bush work

The taper lock bush incorporates a key-way and thread which are machined in accordance with ISO standards. Other variances of standard taper lock bush is commonly referred to as a QTL tapered bush. This bush fits over the tapered hub and a tight fit is produced on the shaft by tightening the cap screws. Removal is easily achieved by using the bolts screwed into the holes of the flange of the bushing and tightening.

I have some coming, so I can't inspect them yet to see how they are fixed to a shaft. In my case, I'm using it on a motor which has a straight shaft with a key and I'm ALSO using the taper lock bushing on my mill's spindle which doesn't have standard key cuts. Basically my question is, does the taper lock bushing somehow pinch down with a thru bolt.

I see a slit in the bushing but since I don't have the bushings yet, I can't tell how it clamps onto a shaft, if in fact it does? Do I need to drill and tap a hole for a set screw to lock the key in? Joined Apr 12, Messages 3, Taper lock bushings are just that, taper locking. The pulley, gear, or sheave has a corresponding taper to the bushing. As you tighten the set screws the bushing and the pulley, gear, or sheave are forced together and the taper then clamps down on the bushing, then in turn clamps down on the shaft.

No further modifications are required for the assembly to work. Here is a video. RandyM said:. I hope this helps.
