For the sixth year in a row, The Straits Times will join media outlets around the world for Impact Journalism Day, which falls on June 16 this year.

On June 16th, 50 of the most prestigious media from around the world will come together, publishing 60 positive stories. For the sixth edition of Impact Journalism Day, the media are joined by organizations that believe spreading these stories is a first step toward change.
These include the United Nations as well as One Young World, which annually gathers together 1, young leaders from social and corporate sectors who are involved in positive innovations. A large community of well-known personalities and ordinary citizens have also joined the chorus in signing a manifesto to show that everyone - governments, the private sector, civil society, NGOs and everyday people - can take action for a better future. We are frequently bombarded with pictures of a bleak and catastrophic future composed of natural disasters, nuclear wars, cyber attacks, climate change, financial crisis… but….
Likewise, at Positive News we believe that the media should take greater responsibility for how our attention is directed and for how the framing of stories can disempower or empower people. But to genuinely serve the public interest, it should not only expose problems; it has an equal duty to rigorously expose the ways people are responding constructively to those problems.
A growing number of media professionals are acting on the realisation that this is an important and under-represented function of the news. A new generation of journalists is emerging, tooled up with the mindset and understanding to rebalance the media landscape.
And as Impact Journalism Day shows, editors are beginning to dip their toes deeper into the water.
